Emergency Response Efforts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seeks to relieve suffering and care for the poor and those in need  of all nationalities and religions.

The Church has sponsored relief and development projects in 179 countries. Assistance is based on the core principles of personal responsibility, volunteer service, self-reliance, and sustainability. With help from Church members and volunteers, The Church operates both independently and in cooperation with other charitable organizations, governments, and global alliances. More than one million days worth of labor are contributed yearly by Church members and volunteers in support of disaster relief and humanitarian initiatives.

In its emergency response initiatives, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints calls upon all its resources, which include food production and processing, donated used clothing, employment and social/emotional services, spiritual support, and the ability to purchase goods locally in many parts of the world.  With these resources, it offers immediate emergency assistance to victims of natural and man-made disasters by providing short-term, life-sustaining resources such as food, water, shelter, clothing, medical, school, and hygiene supplies, and critical needed services. It promotes individual and family disaster preparedness through training programs and materials. Under the direction of local leadership, Church volunteers distribute supplies, participate in cleanup efforts, and assist other relief organizations to help disaster victims recover.

Emergency relief is one way the Church follows the admonition of Jesus Christ to help others in need. This assistance is made possible by generous donations of cash and in-kind materials from members and friends of the Church.  One hundred percent of every dollar donated goes directly to help people and families in need, without regard to race, religion, or ethnic origin.
